California Ranks 47th in State Freedom Rankings

William P. Ruger and Jason Sorens from George Mason University have come out with a study called Freedom in the 50 States. In it, they calculate Fiscal, Regulatory, Economic, and Personal Freedom Rankings for each state. They then combine them into a single Overall Freedom Ranking - and sadly our Golden State Ranks near the bottom.

From the Executive Summary:

This paper presents the first-ever comprehensive ranking of the American states on their public policies affecting individual freedoms in the economic, social, and personal spheres. We develop and justify our ratings and aggregation procedure on explicitly normative criteria, defining individual freedom as the ability to dispose of one’s own life, liberty, and justly acquired property however one sees fit, so long as one does not coercively infringe on another individual’s ability to do the same.

It should come as no surprise that California not only taxes and regulates its economy more than most other states, it also aggressively interferes in the personal lives of its citizens. California ranks #48 on economic freedom and #37 on personal freedom.

Burping Worms & the Proverbial "Global Warming Cliff"

How do you know when we've gone over that proverbial Global Warming cliff?

Perhaps it when global warming proponents begin creating floating cities despite the fact that
global sea levles are the same as they were in 1979.

One might argue that it is when proponents are forced to rebrand 'global warming' because the term 'global warming' has become a marketing liability.

Or maybe it is when proponents tell us that our trips to In-N-Out are killing the planet.

One could even argue we fell off the cliff when Legislatures began considering the
elimination of free parking to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Indeed a case could be made for each of those. But my friends, I would argue that when we now blame climate change on burping worms the tumble has officially taken place. No, this is not a joke.

A Tumbling Dow & Obama's Blame Game

For the most part, Americans have welcomed the Obama era in the same spirit of hope the President campaigned on. But after five weeks in office, it's become clear that Mr. Obama's policies are slowing, if not stopping, what would otherwise be the normal process of economic recovery. From punishing business to squandering scarce national public resources, Team Obama is creating more uncertainty and less confidence -- and thus a longer period of recession or subpar growth.

On March 3, CL favorite Jim Cramer at CNBC lambasted the Obama economic disaster:

"Until they realize that their agenda is destroying the life savings of millions of Americans, then all I can give you is caution... I'm not saying Mr. President go stare at the Bloomberg quote machine and come to your senses. I just want some sign that Obama realizes the market is totally falling apart and that his agenda has a big hand in that happening. I don't know about you but I felt it everywhere I went this weekend... A young kid took me aside. He said I was right when I said we've elected a Leninist... I felt the total lack of control we all feel right now, the, "It's out of my hands but where's the authority?" The, "Hey it's amateur hour at our darkest moment."

As the WSJ points out, as the Dow keeps dropping, the President is running out of people to blame. In the meantime their continued assault on business and investors is delaying a recovery and ensuring that the expansion will be weaker than it should be when it finally does arrive.

Obama's Strategy: Never Let a Good Crisis Go To Waste

As Rahm Emanuel says, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And this crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not do before.”

And there you have it... the strategy behind the sweeping agenda that President Obama laid out, and the reason Sen. Byrd is criticizing Obama for appointing "czars” to oversee federal policy, saying these executive positions amount to
a power grab by the executive branch.

So is the Obama Administration using a crisis atmosphere to amass more money and power in Washington? David Boaz says yes.

Voters respond enthusiastically to
determined leadership at the moment of crisis. But laws made in a crisis atmosphere, from the Gulf of Tonkin resolution to Nixon’s wage and price controls to the TARP legislation, usually turn out badly. Democrats want to use this crisis to ram through government takeovers that they couldn’t achieve in any other period. We should slow down, take a deep breath, and carefully consider whether we want a clumsy, always-behind-the-times bureaucracy to take charge of our health, our access to energy, and our educational future.

Eat the Rich: Understanding the 2% Illusion

Welcome to the "Eat the Rich" Cafe where President Obama's menu is the most ambitious and expensive domestic agenda since LBJ. All that's left to do is figure out how to pay the tab. On Tuesday, he left the impression that we need merely end "tax breaks for the wealthiest 2% of Americans," and he promised that households earning less than $250,000 won't see their taxes increased by "one single dime."

Here's some news... Even if Obama took ALL of the income of the top wealthiest 2% of Americans it still wouldn't be enough to pay for his irresponsible agenda.

Today's Wall Street Journal discusses the "
2% illusion."

Bottom line: Obama is selling the country on an illusion. Unwinding the U.S. commitment in Iraq and allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire cannot pay for his agenda. Taxes on the not-so-rich will need to rise as well. President Obama is very good at portraying his agenda as nothing more than center-left pragmatism. But pragmatists don't ignore the data. And the reality is that the only way to pay for Mr. Obama's ambitions is to reach ever deeper into the pockets of the American middle class.

And before the chant "PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE" arises from the peanut gallery let's recall one factoid: The wealthiest 2% earn just 22% of all income, but pay 40+ percent of all taxes. Hmmm, isn't that double their "fair share"? Especially considering that something like 40% of Americans pay zero income taxes. That my friends is no doctrine of fairness.

Audio: Camille Paglia shreds the Fairness Doctrine

Ever been to one of those Brazilian restaurants where they bring out plate after plate of nothing but red meat? Steaks, chops, sausages — all you can eat, until you’re glassy-eyed from the sheer red-meatiness of it all.

Well Camille Paglia serves up an eight course meal of red sustanance by tearing apart her fellow democrats for pushing a return to the 'Fairness Doctrine'. And she hits the nail on the head... in an attempt to gobble up power and squelch the opposition's voice those democrats pushing the fairness doctrine betray the very soul of their party. Click HERE to listen.

BTW, here’s the latest Democrat to come out in favor of 'Fairness'.

UPDATE: Obama administration no longer issuing denials on Fairness Doctrine

Government grows while economy tanks

The Year of the Ox, year 4706 in the Chinese lunar calendar, is supposed to represent prosperity through perseverance and hard work. But the hope for a better year in 2009 was being dashed by the job losses and the growing concern that many more would join the ranks of the 2.6 million who became unemployed in 2008, the most annual job losses since 1945.

A slew of American heavyweight companies, including Caterpillar, Pfizer, Sprint Nextel, Home Depot and General Motors, announced cuts Monday adding up to 45,000 jobs lost. What's more, a group of business economists predicted many more job losses in the year ahead.

The Labor Department report for November 2008 states that the goods-producing sector shed 126,000 jobs in its 23rd consecutive monthly decline. The manufacturing sector marked its 26th straight monthy decline, losing 85,000 jobs. The services sector lost 31,000 jobs. Small businesses employing fewer than 50 workers were hard hit, losing 25,000 jobs.

But here comes your twist of irony for the day....

As the private sector slashes jobs to remain competitive in a difficult economy, the government is growing by leaps and bounds. The Labor Department reported that the government added 23,000 jobs in the month of November.

This as a new probe reports that your taxpayer dollars are funding government workers who are using their computers to log onto "sexually explicit" Web sites.  In one instance, the report cites an National Science Foundation (NSF) "senior official" who allegedly spent 20 percent of his work hours "viewing sexually explicit" Web sites -- amounting to a potential loss of $58,000 in employee compensation.

Oh and by the way, the NSF is currently requesting an additional $3 billion in the stimulus bill.

Time for an Intervention: No More Stimulus

What's a TRILLION dollars amongst friends?

Faced with a federal budget deficit projected to reach an unheard of $1.2 trillion this fiscal year and a skeptical public, Democrats are doubling up efforts to sell their economic recovery plan. Yet President-elect Barack Obama's economic stimulus package, pegged at another $800 billion, would only add to the deficit.

That's on top of a $700 billion financial rescue, a $17 billion auto bailout and the first $150 billion stimulus (that's the one approved right before the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression).

The national debt already has topped $10 trillion -- or $35,000 per person. And the bigger it gets, the more the country has to pay in interest every year. But the deepening recession creates the opportunity for federal intervention and government experimentation on a scale unseen since the New Deal -- and that is just the window Obama and crew need to
enact the "change" he desires

With Economists warning
against more stimulus and bailout plans, where does it end?

Who's Crippling California's Government?

In today’s LA Times George Skelton applauds Steinberg and Bass for thinking outside of the box to devise a deficit reduction plan that needs only majority approval.

In the article Skelton notes that it is California's “two-thirds supermajority vote requirement to pass a budget or raise taxes [that] has made this complex state practically ungovernable.”

Mr. Skelton I beg to differ.

Currently the state faces a $40 billion deficit in the next 18 months. That is not the result of a two-thirds supermajority vote requirement.

Since 2000 the general fund budget has grown 29 percent, not counting for inflation. That is not the result of a two-thirds supermajority vote requirement.

California continues to spend billions of dollars on unproven scientific claims and environmental boondogles. That is not the result of a two-thirds supermajority vote requirement.

California’s spending exceeds revenue by about a billion dollars a month. That is not the result of a two-thirds supermajority vote requirement.

Democrats have steadfastly refused to implement budget reforms such as establishing a ‘rainy day fund’ or a spending cap that would restrict state spending growth. Perhaps Skelton wants to blame the Democratic rejection of sound budgeting policies on the two-thirds supermajority vote requirement.

Skelton and others can continue to blame the ails of California government on Republicans. They can call out the Republicans for refusing to increase taxes and ‘crippling state government’. But that blame is wrongly placed and disingenous at best.

It is the addiction to spending that has crippled California’s government and put the state in the precarious economic situation we now face.

If we are going to solve the budget crisis not only this year, but for future years as well, there is no doubt that now is the time to reform California’s budget system.

A recent poll by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California shows the vast majority of Californians – 68 percent of those surveyed – join Republicans in calling for a spending limit to end the obsessive spending addiction by Democrats. What’s the irony? A budgetary spending limit would likely require a two-thirds supermajority vote requirement to pass. And I assure you, it’s not the Republicans holding up that vote.

Why Keynesian Fiscal Strategies Do Not Work

Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute does an excellent job explaining why Keynesian fiscal strategies do not work in a new video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation.

With President-elect Barack Obama proposing a massive government spending plan, and even some conservatives promoting a tax version to boost economic growth.

It’s more important than ever to combat the myths of Keynesianism with President-elect Barack Obama proposing a massive government spending plan, and even some conservatives promoting a tax version to boost economic growth.

Stimulate Me: Team Obama Considers $1 TRILLION Plan

A trillion here, a trillion there... pretty soon you're talking about real money.

Apparently, Team Obama is considering a plan to boost the recession-hit U.S. economy that could be far larger than previous estimates and might reach
$1 trillion over two years. Obama aides and advisers have set $600 billion over two years as "a very low-end estimate."

So what will the stimulus bag of goodies look like? Word on the street is that the package will include an initial tax cut and a massive infusion of funds for roads, bridges, water systems, school repair, spreading broadband access, promoting health-care information technology, improving energy efficiency in buildings, renewable-energy projects, and assisting struggling state and local governments.

In other words, planting the seeds for everything he cares about: a green economy, universal health care, a labor resurgence, and big brother as benevolent private-sector “partner.” It is the community organizer’s ultimate dream.

The deepening recession creates the opportunity for federal intervention and government experimentation on a scale unseen since the New Deal -- and that is just the window Obama needs to enact the "change" he desires.

The infrastructure project alone would be the largest of its kind in a half-century. The idea being to revive the economy and create jobs for America's unemployed. But before Obama starts dumping cash into the
giant money hole, he may want to consider the example of Japan in the 1990s and realize that huge public works projects often fail to revive national economies.

Then again when your goal is a restructuring of the American economy and the forging of a new relationship between government and people, why let historical anecdote get in your way.

As Charles Krauthammer recently pointed out, Obama was quite serious when he said he was going to change the world. And now he has a national crisis, a personal mandate, a pliant Congress, a desperate public — and, at his disposal, the greatest pot of money in galactic history

As Obama revealingly said just last week, “this painful crisis . . . provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy to improve the lives of ordinary people.” Transformation is his mission. Crisis provides the opportunity. The election provides him the power.

Putting the TARP Bailout Program to Bed

Last week the Bush Administration tried to find ways to use the funds available in the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) to bail out the Detroit automobile companies. That decision is just the latest of weekly, and sometimes daily, Administration reinterpretations of the TARP program's purposes. And no doubt the incoming Administration will continue this creativity and TARP will increasingly become a White House fund for politically sensitive companies. .

The Bush Administration's decision to consider responding with TARP funds to Congress's refusal to bail out the Detroit automobile companies underscores how far the Treasury has reinterpreted the mission of TARP. The only way to prevent further misuse of the program is to end it. Therefore, as Heritage notes, it is time to End the TARP bailout program to bed.

The Garbage Gestapo Cometh

Posted by CL in

What is the most pressing political, economic or social issue facing this country today?

Is it the prospect of recession?
Or rising violence in our streets?

Or the sacrifice of our brave young soldiers in Afghanistan?
Or could it be family breakdown?
A strong case might be made for any of these things.

Yet if you live in Gwinnett County Georgia it seems recycling is the uber issue of the day. In this community local government has deemed that voluntary enterprise is no longer enough. Now the tyranny of recycling will treat Gwinnett residents like criminals in their own homes by
dropping the hammer on those who fail to recycle.

The new solid waste management ordinance provides for a civil fine of $500 for violations, which includes those who dare fail to “source separate residential recovered materials.” So while residents spend time and thought trying to ensure items are placed into the right boxes, the Garbage Gestapo will respond not with thanks and a word of encouragement, but with the threat of arbitrary fines to punish residents.

Encouraging recycling is one thing. But encouraging the citizenry to believe that putting the wrong item in the wrong box, however inadvertently, amounts to a serious anti-social act to be fiscally punished is pathetic at best, not to mention a sad commentary on the victory of government over personal liberty.

Bad Time for a Bad Idea: Increasing California's Car Tax

Apparently for some, the vehicle license fee that got Gray Davis recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger elected looks like a "good idea" again. As a matter of fact, LA Times is calling on Schwarzenegger to bring the tax back to its historical level.

But as noted over at Chlorinated Liberty, we should be clear: this proposed solution would mean the average American family will be hit with an additional $900 to $1,000 in additional taxes.  Thankfully we have people like Senator George Runner making the case for the taxpayer.  You can see the video here

"Change" = Hijacking GOP platform

One could easily argue that a leading reason Obama won the White House was his ability to hijack the GOP language of tax-cuts.  Although to be clear, he hijacked the message in phrase only.  Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a "tax cut."  According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, we know that in reality Obama’s plan to cut taxes on 95 percent of taxpayers will effectively increase government spending by an average of $64.8 billion a year and effectively raise income tax rates for many Americans, even on some earning $20-$50,000 per year.  But I digress...

Since stealing the tax-cut platform worked out so well, Obama is now borrowing from the GOP plank once more.  Taking a line from the Republican-revolution playbook of the 1990s, President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday told the nation's governors that he wants them to reassert states as the laboratories for solutions to the nation's big problems.

So let me get this straight... Obama is now a federalist

Maybe I should take comfort in the fact that even Obama realizes Republicans have the better message.  At the moment he just does a better job at packaging that message.
